The workshop is held at the Joseph Black Building, home of the School of Chemistry at the University of Glasgow. The building sits on the main Gilmorehill campus in the heart of Glasgow's West End.

From Glasgow Airport (GLA)

Recommended: bus + subway · ~45–50 min total

    Outside Arrivals, take the Glasgow Airport Express (bus 500) to Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre. every 10 min ~25 min ~£8

    From Buchanan Bus Station, walk 5 minutes to Buchanan Street Subway Station (follow signs for the Subway / SPT Underground).

    Take the subway Inner Circle to Hillhead — three stops. ~8 min ~£1.80

    Exit Hillhead station onto Byres Road and walk 4 minutes south along University Avenue to the Joseph Black Building entrance on University Place.
Tip: First Bus route 77 also runs directly from the airport to the West End and stops near the venue — useful if you have heavy luggage — but runs less frequently than the 500/subway combination.
By taxi

A taxi direct from Glasgow Airport to the Joseph Black Building takes around 15 minutes in normal traffic and costs approximately £20–25. Taxis are available from the rank immediately outside Arrivals.

From Edinburgh Airport (EDI)

Tram to Waverley, then train to Glasgow · ~1 hr 45 min total

    Follow signs to the Edinburgh Tram from inside the terminal. Take the tram to Edinburgh Waverley (end of the line, St Andrew Square stop — short walk to Waverley station). every 7–8 min ~35 min

    From Edinburgh Waverley, take a ScotRail train to Glasgow Queen Street. Services run very frequently throughout the day — you rarely need to book in advance for this leg. up to 4 per hour ~50 min

    From Glasgow Queen Street, walk 5 minutes to Buchanan Street Subway Station, then take the Inner Circle to Hillhead (three stops). ~10 min

    Walk 4 minutes from Hillhead subway station to the Joseph Black Building on University Place.
Combined tram + train tickets for the Edinburgh Airport → Waverley leg can be bought at vending machines in the check-in hall, at the tram stop, or online. ScotRail advance fares are cheapest when booked ahead at scotrail.co.uk.
By direct coach

Scottish Citylink runs a direct coach from Edinburgh Airport to Buchanan Bus Station, Glasgow. ~1 hr 10 min ~£10–15 — then follow subway steps above. Book at citylink.co.uk.

By train

Glasgow Queen Street or Glasgow Central, then subway to Hillhead

Glasgow has two main train stations. Which you arrive at depends on your origin — check your ticket. Both are a short subway ride from the venue.

🟠 The Glasgow Subway

Glasgow's subway — affectionately known as the Clockwork Orange — is a simple circular underground railway with 15 stations. There is one line running two directions: Inner Circle (clockwise) and Outer Circle (anticlockwise). Trains run every few minutes. A single fare is approximately £1.80. Tap-in contactless payment is accepted.

The stop for the Joseph Black Building is Hillhead — a 4-minute walk from the venue.

Arriving at Glasgow Queen Street

    Exit onto George Square, then walk 5 minutes to Buchanan Street Subway Station (well signposted).

    Take the Inner Circle three stops to Hillhead: Buchanan Street → St George's Cross → Kelvinbridge → Hillhead. ~8 min

    Exit Hillhead station onto Byres Road, walk 4 minutes south on University Avenue to the Joseph Black Building.

Arriving at Glasgow Central

    Exit onto Gordon Street and walk 5 minutes to St Enoch Subway Station (follow signs for the Underground / Subway).

    Take the Outer Circle four stops to Hillhead: St Enoch → Buchanan Street → St George's Cross → Kelvinbridge → Hillhead. ~10 min

    Exit Hillhead station onto Byres Road, walk 4 minutes south on University Avenue to the Joseph Black Building.
Intercity connections: Frequent direct trains serve Glasgow from Edinburgh (~50 min), London Euston (~4.5 hrs via Avanti), and other UK cities. Book ScotRail services at scotrail.co.uk and long-distance services at trainline.com.

From the workshop accommodation

Queen Margaret Residences → Joseph Black Building · ~20 min walk

Workshop accommodation is at Queen Margaret Residences, Bellshaugh Court, Kirklee, Glasgow G12 0PR — a pleasant 20-minute walk from the Joseph Black Building.

🚶 The recommended walking route takes you through the Glasgow Botanic Gardens and south along Byres Road — one of the West End's best-known streets, lined with cafés, bakeries, and shops. A lovely way to start the morning. Exit the residences onto Bellshaugh Road, head south through the Botanic Gardens entrance on Great Western Road, cross into the gardens and exit onto Byres Road. Follow Byres Road south to University Avenue, then turn left — the Joseph Black Building is on your right.

A taxi from the residences to the venue takes around 5 minutes and costs approximately £5–7.
